About the Doctors
Dr. Steven Poleski
Dr. Steven Poleski has a Comprehensive Ophthalmology practice with a sub-specialty interest in Anterior Segment Surgery, including Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Corneal Surgery and treatment of corneal and other surface disorders of the eye.
He graduated from the McGill University School of Medicine and completed his residency afterward in Ophthalmology at Queen’s University. Following a research year in Ophthalmic Pathology, Dr. Poleski completed Cornea and External Disease training at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Poleski is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Canada) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Poleski has been in practice in Ottawa since 1986, and established the Ottawa Eye Clinic in 1997 on a former well-known National Capital Commission property in Ottawa’s East End. He maintains hospital privileges at Montfort Hospital as well as the Ottawa Hospital and courtesy privileges at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Poleski has been active in teaching medical students and residents, as well as his Medical and Optometry collegues.
Dr. Joseph Mittelman
Dr. Joseph Mittelman graduated from the University of Waterloo with his Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree in 1975, having completed a Bachelor’s degree in 1969 and a Master’s degree in 1973 from McGill University. After practicing in Hawkesbury from 1975-1982, Dr. Mittelman moved to his own practice in Rockland in 1982 until 2005, but over the years had worked with the Ottawa Eye Clinic part-time. Dr. Mittelman joined the Ottawa Eye Clinic on a full-time basis in the fall of 2005.
Dr. Mittelman has served various Optometric professional associations. First, as President of the Ottawa Society of Optometrists from 1976 until 1977 and as Associate Editor of The Canadian Journal of Optometry from 1977 until 1983. Elected to represent Eastern Ontario, Dr. Mittelman was with the Ontario Association of Optometrists from 1977-2000 and was its President from 1983-1985. He then became President of the College of Optometrists of Ontario (the regulatory body governing the profession of optometry in Ontario) from 1990 – 1996. Afterwards, he continued to serve on the Optometry Review Committee from 1997-2003 (which he chaired from 2000-2003) as well as on committees of his national association, the Canadian Association of Optometrists. Presently, he serves as a clinical assessor for the Canadian Examiners of Optometry and chairs a committee with this organization.
Dr. Mittelman has a broad range of experience in Comprehensive Optometric assessments. He has a special interest in geriatric care and visits several long-term care residences and nursing homes in the Ottawa area.
